Uniondale lies in the Kammanasie river valley, close to the river’s headwaters. The main road (N9) from the south climbs the Potjiesberg pass to 900 metres above sea level.
The different varieties of aloes, which flower throughout the year, attract many gorgeous sunbirds, like the Malachite and Lesser Collared. The rarer Orange Breasted Sunbird is to be found where Proteas grow on the hills.
